COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Honours) in Forestry is a four-year Level 8 degree focused on sustainable forest management, blending academic theory with extensive practical experience. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills required for careers in forest management, conservation, timber production, and environmental consultancy. In the first year, students build a foundation in core sciences and forestry principles, studying modules such as Plant Biology, Forest Establishment, Dendrology, Wood Science, Forest Surveying and Mapping, and Fundamentals of Forestry, while also developing ICT and mathematics skills relevant to forestry applications. The second year focuses on applied forestry and field experience, with modules covering Timber Technology, Forest Mensuration, Forest Protection, Forest Soils, Forestry and the Environment, and Applied Geographical Information Systems, alongside a practical placement to gain hands-on industry experience. In the third year, students advance their understanding of forest management and economics through modules including Forest Economics, Sustainable Forest Management, Plantation Silviculture, Commercial Forestry Practices, Forest Inventory, Forest Engineering, Forest Harvesting, Forest Management Plan, and Small Enterprise Management, combining both scientific and managerial competencies. The final year emphasizes professional development, research, and applied project work, with modules such as Land Science Research Methods, Project Management, Marketing Strategies for Small Business, Professional Development, and Geographic Information Systems. Students also select electives tailored to specific interests, including Advanced Silviculture, Rural Entrepreneurship, Biodiversity Management, Sustainable & Renewable Energy, Integrated Pest Management, or Sustainable Water Management Systems. Throughout the program, students engage in fieldwork, practical exercises, and research projects, enabling them to develop expertise in silviculture, forest operations, environmental assessment, and sustainable management strategies.
