COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the BSc (Hons) Common Entry science course, students study a core set of foundational subjects designed to provide a broad understanding of scientific principles. Mandatory modules include Fundamental Biology, which introduces the essential concepts of cellular structure, genetics, and physiology, followed by Animal and Human Biology, focusing on anatomy, physiology, and biological systems relevant to human and animal life. Chemistry 1 and 2 build a strong understanding of chemical principles, including reaction mechanisms, stoichiometry, and laboratory techniques. Physics 1 and 2 develop knowledge of classical and modern physics, covering mechanics, electricity, magnetism, and energy principles, while Quantitative Methods 1 and 2 equip students with the mathematical and statistical tools required to analyze scientific data. Laboratory Science provides hands-on experience in experimental techniques, safety protocols, and practical problem-solving. Elective modules allow students to begin exploring more specialized areas of interest, such as Current Concepts in Science and Current Concepts in Brewing and Distilling Science, which introduce contemporary scientific topics and applications relevant to the brewing and biopharmaceutical industries. Together, these modules ensure students gain a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills, preparing them to choose a specialist pathway in Year 2 while developing critical thinking, analytical abilities, and a solid scientific foundation.
