COURSE CURRICULUM
The BSc (Hons) in Applied Health Care is a four-year honours degree that prepares students for a wide range of roles within the healthcare sector. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical training to help students develop the skills, attitudes, and experience needed to work effectively in healthcare environments. In the first year, students are introduced to the basic foundations of healthcare. They study subjects such as anatomy and physiology, psychology for health care, and principles of health promotion, which help them understand how the human body works and how different factors affect health and wellbeing. Students also learn important academic and personal development skills through modules such as learning to learn and life skills for health and wellbeing. In addition, they study care for older adults, medical surgical care, and healthcare informatics, while their first placement gives them the opportunity to experience real healthcare settings and apply what they have learned. In the second year, students build on these foundations and begin to explore more specialised healthcare topics. They study modules such as fundamentals of care, pharmacology for health care, medical surgical care, and mental health care. They also complete further placements, allowing them to gain additional practical experience. Some elective modules may also be available, such as nutrition for health or activity coordination for older adults, although the availability of electives can depend on scheduling and other factors.During the third year, the program focuses on developing more advanced knowledge and professional skills. Students learn about evidence-based healthcare, intellectual disability care, and technical roles within applied healthcare. They also explore the management of care and connected health technologies. Optional modules allow students to further specialise in areas such as maternal and newborn health, health and wellbeing, psychology and sociology in healthcare, or advanced medical surgical care.In the final year, students focus on professional development and leadership in healthcare. They study advanced evidence-based practice, management and leadership, ethical and legal issues, and specialised areas such as disabilities and advocacy, mental health recovery, and palliative care. These subjects prepare graduates to work confidently in modern healthcare systems and support individuals with diverse health needs.
