COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Honours) in Agriculture is a four-year Level 8 degree designed to prepare students for modern commercial farming and the wider agribusiness sector. The program combines practical farm management skills with scientific, business, and technological knowledge, ensuring graduates are well-equipped for contemporary agricultural careers. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in farm accounts, plant and animal biology, chemistry for land sciences, animal production, crop production, mechanisation, and agricultural communication and computer applications. The second year builds on this knowledge with environmental science, crop technology, dairy and cattle production, soil management, and a 12-week farm placement, allowing students to gain practical experience and exposure to professional farm operations. Elective modules such as sheep production and mechanisation are available subject to class size and prerequisites. The third year focuses on integrating scientific, business, and technological skills, covering areas such as food analysis, biotechnology, quality food production, agricultural entrepreneurship, marketing, financial management, project research, and farm business. Additional electives like farm buildings and fabrication provide further practical experience. In the final year, students advance their knowledge with land science research methods, livestock and crop management, soil nutrient management, biodiversity management, and statistics for research. Students undertake a substantial student project and have the opportunity to select electives in areas such as rural entrepreneurship, project management, sustainable energy, integrated pest management, and water management systems. Throughout the program, the emphasis is on balancing hands-on practical experience with scientific and business understanding. Graduates are prepared for roles in farm management, agrifood cooperatives, meat and dairy processing, agribusiness sales, advisory roles, and other related areas. This degree equips students with the expertise, practical skills, and strategic insight required to contribute effectively to the productivity, sustainability, and profitability of modern agricultural enterprises while navigating the challenges of a technologically advanced and globally connected food sector.
