COURSE CURRICULUM

The Agricultural Science program is structured over four years, combining fundamental sciences with specialised agricultural knowledge, practical experience, and research. In Year 1, students build a strong scientific foundation. Semester 1 includes Introductory Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, ICT for Scientists, and Good Laboratory Practice and Core Skills. Semester 2 develops this base further with Physical and Organic Chemistry, Cell Biology and Biochemistry, Physics and Mathematics for Scientists, along with Animal Biology and Plant Biology. Year 2 focuses on applied agricultural and food sciences. Semester 3 includes Microbiology 1, Mechanisation and Safety, Statistics for Scientists, Agricultural Soils Management, Environmental Science, and Food Analysis. In Semester 4, students study Animal Nutrition, Mathematics for Agri-Scientists, Food Process Technology, Grassland and Dairy Production, Tillage Crop Production, and Beef and Sheep Production. Some specialised modules are delivered at Kildalton College of Agriculture.In Year 3, Semester 5 covers Food Management Systems, Agriculture and the Environment, Food Formulation, Farm Business, Crop Technology, and Animal Breeding and Technology. In Semester 6, students choose between a Farm Placement or an Industrial Placement to gain practical experience, or alternatively take Science Professional Development or Study Abroad for Scientists. The final year emphasises research and advanced management skills. Semester 7 includes Land Science Research Methods, Animal Health Welfare and Behaviour, Applied Farm Management, Sustainable Crop Management Systems, Agricultural ICT, and Marketing Strategy for Small Business. In Semester 8, students complete a Land Science Research Project and study Soils Nutrient Management, Food Traceability and Bio-analysis, Rural Entrepreneurship, and Sustainable and Renewable Energy, along with choosing between Integrated Pest Management or Sustainable Water Management Systems.
