COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Pharmaceutical Science is a three-year, full-time degree designed to prepare students for careers in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sectors. This course equips students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute to the discovery, development, and manufacture of drugs and therapies. Ireland’s pharmaceutical industry is a key global player, with over 150 companies operating in the country, including nine of the world’s top ten. This strong industry presence ensures excellent employment opportunities for graduates of this program.The first year provides students with a solid foundation in the core sciences, including biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, alongside introductory modules in biotechnology, pharmaceutical science, and laboratory skills. Students also develop essential ICT competencies and have the option to explore an elective such as forensic science or science and society, broadening their understanding of how science impacts the wider world.In the second year, students build on this foundation through more advanced scientific modules such as organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and biopharmaceutical science. Practical laboratory work is integral, with modules in spectroscopy, chromatographic techniques, and applied mathematics allowing students to gain hands-on experience with industry-standard instrumentation. Students also study pharmaceutical science and statistics, enhancing their analytical and problem-solving capabilities.The third year focuses on advanced scientific techniques and industrial applications. Modules include industrial processing, pharmaceutical biotechnology, advanced spectroscopic analysis, chromatographic method development, and total quality management. Students also engage in laboratory data modelling, learn about Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and data integrity, and complete a substantial research project. This combination of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and research skills ensures graduates are well-prepared for employment in pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and related science industries, or for further study at honours or postgraduate level.
