COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Organic Agriculture is structured to progressively build students’ technical expertise, business competence, and specialist knowledge in organic systems. Years 1 and 2 concentrate on developing the core practical and managerial skills required in modern farm businesses. During this stage, students gain hands-on experience alongside academic study, ensuring they understand the operational, financial, and regulatory aspects of running a successful agricultural enterprise. A significant benefit of completing Year 2 is eligibility for Green Cert recognition, which qualifies graduates for stamp duty exemption and land transfer schemes available to young farmers, providing important professional and financial advantages.Year 2 deepens students’ applied knowledge through specialised modules delivered across two semesters. In Semester 3, students study Agricultural Microbiology, Applied ICT in Agriculture, Concepts in Soil Science, Farm Financial Accounting, Genetics and Breeding, and Principles and Standards of Organic Production. These subjects strengthen understanding of soil health, biological systems, financial management, digital technologies, and the regulatory framework governing organic farming. In Semester 4, the focus expands to Agricultural Marketing I, Agricultural Micro Economics, Agroforestry Production Systems, Animal Nutrition, and Fundamentals of Protected Cropping Systems in Organic Agriculture. Together, these modules integrate science, sustainability, and business strategy, preparing students for complex decision-making in organic enterprises.Year 3 shifts towards advanced professional development, equipping students with the strategic, analytical, and leadership skills required for long-term success in the agricultural industry. During this year, students further explore organic production systems while deepening their understanding of the biological processes and business principles that underpin the sector, ensuring they graduate as knowledgeable and capable contributors to Ireland’s growing organic agriculture industry.
