COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the BSc in Science (General) at SETU Waterford, students gain a strong foundation in the core scientific disciplines. Semester 1 covers introductory courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, alongside good laboratory practice and core skills, ensuring students develop essential practical and analytical abilities. Students also learn to use information and communication technologies relevant to scientific study, preparing them for data analysis, research, and laboratory work.Semester 2 builds on this foundation with more advanced modules such as cell biology and biochemistry, physical and organic chemistry, and physics for scientists, alongside mathematics for scientists. These courses deepen theoretical understanding while continuing to develop practical skills in laboratory settings. In addition, students can choose two elective modules from areas such as introduction to biotechnology and pharmaceutical science, food science, plant biology, or science and society. These electives allow students to explore specialised fields, gain exposure to potential career paths, and make informed decisions about their future specialisation within science.This combination of core subjects and elective options ensures that students not only build a solid grounding in the principles of science but also begin to explore applied and interdisciplinary areas. Practical laboratory work is integrated throughout the year, fostering hands-on experience in experimental design, data collection, and analysis. By the end of Year 1, students will have developed both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, allowing them to make informed choices about which scientific specialism they wish to pursue in subsequent years of their degree. The first-year curriculum emphasizes versatility, critical thinking, and scientific literacy, providing an excellent foundation for further study and future careers in diverse scientific and technology-based industries.
