COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) in Construction Management is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students for professional roles in the construction industry, equipping them with both technical knowledge and managerial expertise. The first year establishes a solid foundation in construction principles, introducing students to essential topics such as AutoCAD, IT and Communications, Applied Mathematics, Land Surveying, Domestic Technology and Structural Appreciation, and Building Services, alongside an understanding of the construction industry and the fundamentals of construction management. Students learn the basics of building materials, structural concepts, and digital modelling techniques including Building Information Modelling (BIM), which supports the development of practical and visualisation skills essential for modern construction practice. The second year builds upon this foundation by focusing on intermediate-level technical and managerial competencies. Modules cover Measuring and Estimating, Earthworks Measurement, Construction Health, Safety and Risk Management, Contract Management and Planning, Accounting, and advanced Commercial and Industrial Technology with Sustainable Technology integration. Students also explore Construction Law and legal frameworks relevant to the industry, ensuring they develop a holistic understanding of project management and compliance. In the third year, students consolidate their knowledge through applied site management, professional practice, research methods, and an integrated construction technology project, where they apply learned skills to realistic construction scenarios. A key feature of the program is the work placement, which provides a structured, industry-based experience allowing students to manage real construction projects, engage with multidisciplinary teams, and develop critical problem-solving and leadership skills. Overall, the course produces graduates who are capable of planning, organising, coordinating, and managing complex construction projects, with a strong awareness of technology, sustainability, health and safety, and legal requirements, preparing them for successful careers as construction managers, project managers, or site managers in Ireland and internationally.
