COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Ord) in Applied Microbiology is a three-year full-time degree that focuses on the study of microorganisms and their applications in health, industry, and the environment. The program provides a strong combination of theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory skills, and professional experience, preparing students for careers in diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, environmental management, and related microbiology fields.In Year 1, students build a solid foundation in biology, chemistry, physics, and quantitative methods. Core modules such as Fundamental Biology, Animal and Human Biology, Chemistry, and Laboratory Science give students the theoretical background and hands-on experience required for more advanced microbiology studies. Students also explore current scientific concepts and develop practical lab skills that will be essential throughout the program.Year 2 introduces more specialized microbiology modules. Students study Fundamentals of Microbiology, Methods in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Parasitology, and Mycology and Virology. The Methods in Microbiology module emphasizes practical laboratory skills, allowing students to directly apply theoretical knowledge. This year provides students with deeper insights into microorganisms and their role in health, disease, and industrial applications.In Year 3, students focus on applied and professional aspects of microbiology. Modules include Diagnostic Microbiology, Microbial Cell Factory, Microbiology for Pharmaceutics, Environmental Science, and Quality Management, Experimental Design, and Data Analysis. A six-month industry placement during Semester 6 offers real-world experience, allowing students to apply their knowledge in professional settings. Small group practicals ensure personalized learning and skill development.Graduates of this program gain strong laboratory competencies, analytical skills, and professional experience, which can lead to careers in the microbiology sector or progression to Level 8 honors programs, research, or other advanced scientific study.
