COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Applied Health Care is a three-year undergraduate program designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers within the healthcare sector. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, allowing students to develop the skills and confidence required to provide high-quality care to patients across various settings, including hospitals, community care, general practice, and emerging areas such as telehealth. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of healthcare, including anatomy and physiology, psychology, principles of health promotion, and care of the older adult. Alongside classroom-based learning, students participate in their first placement, which provides an opportunity to observe and practice essential skills in a real-world environment. Year two builds on these foundations by exploring more specialised areas such as medical surgical care, mental health, pharmacology, and professional development. Students continue to complete placements, giving them hands-on experience in patient care and an understanding of multidisciplinary teamwork. Elective modules allow students to focus on specific areas of interest, such as nutrition or activity coordination for older adults, depending on availability. In the third year, students focus on advanced aspects of healthcare, including evidence-based practice, management of care, and technical roles within the healthcare system. They study the application of psychology and sociology to healthcare and have the opportunity to engage with connected health initiatives. Practical placements in the final year provide extended clinical experience, enabling students to consolidate their learning and develop professional competence. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to reflect on their practice, develop critical thinking skills, and apply the best available evidence in clinical settings. By combining academic study with repeated, structured placements, the program ensures that graduates are well-prepared to work effectively in diverse healthcare environments, respond to patient needs across the lifespan, and contribute meaningfully to the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.
