COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng in Electrical Engineering is a three-year Level 7 program designed to provide students with the knowledge, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities needed to work effectively as engineering technicians in electrical services, automation, power generation, renewable energy, and control systems. The first year lays the foundation with modules in fundamental engineering mathematics, introductory calculus, electrical science, electronic devices, discrete active circuits, and engineering science, along with computer-aided electrical engineering and workshop skills to build technical proficiency. In the second year, students advance their mathematical and engineering knowledge through further calculus, probability, linear algebra, and differential equations, while developing applied skills in instrumentation and measurement, robotics and control, electrical machines, power systems, building services, security system design, and project-based applications in electrical control. The third year emphasizes integration of theory and practice through modules such as transform methods, linear and Fourier analysis, mechatronics, industrial electronics, industrial automation, electrical services design, sustainable heat and power generation, lighting and daylight design, electrical power engineering, and engineering management, culminating in a two-part electrical engineering project. Across all three years, students gain hands-on experience in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting electrical systems, while learning to apply scientific principles, engineering techniques, and industry-standard tools. The program also incorporates sustainable energy practices, preparing graduates to contribute to Ireland’s renewable energy targets and smart grid initiatives. By combining mathematical rigor, engineering fundamentals, practical workshops, and project-based learning, the course ensures graduates are equipped with the technical competence, professional awareness, and applied skills required to enter the workforce and support the design, operation, and maintenance of modern electrical and automated systems.
