COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) in Early Childhood Education and Care is structured over three years to provide a comprehensive foundation in supporting the learning, development, and well-being of children from birth to school age. In the first year, students focus on core concepts such as creative arts practice, child development, psychology, play-based pedagogy, health and well-being, and social policy, alongside academic skills and supervised professional practice to gain hands-on experience. The second year builds on this foundation with advanced supervised practice, creative arts for school-aged children, the psychology and sociology of children, diversity and inclusion, language development, and school-age childcare, allowing students to develop practical, applied knowledge across different age groups and settings. In the third year, the emphasis shifts to leadership and specialized practice, including critical perspectives on children’s health and well-being, STEM curriculum development for early childhood and afterschool education, regulation and inspection, law for early childhood practice, advanced pedagogical methods, educational needs, and an additional supervised professional practice placement. Across all years, mandatory modules ensure students gain a deep theoretical understanding while also developing practical skills, reflective practice, and professional competence, preparing graduates to deliver high-quality, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate early childhood education and care.
