COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Business in Recreation and Sport Management (Ordinary Level) at SETU Waterford is a three-year program designed for students who have a passion for sport and want to explore a career in the sports and recreation industry while developing strong business skills. The course is structured to provide a balance of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and professional development, combining elements of business, sport science, management, and applied recreation. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of sport and exercise science, physiology, sports pedagogy, sociology of sport, sports studies, and business practices relevant to the industry. They also develop essential academic and workplace skills, including communication, IT, research, human resource management, and marketing principles. This year ensures a strong foundation in both the scientific and business aspects of sport, preparing students for more advanced studies. In the second year, students focus on applied aspects of sport and recreation, including strength and conditioning, exercise programming, sports psychology, event management, sport and event tourism, facility operations, services marketing, accounting, economics, and project management. This year emphasizes practical skills and the application of theory in real-world settings, allowing students to understand how sports and recreation businesses operate. The final year includes enterprise and entrepreneurship, financial decision making, recreation and social interventions, research methods, and statistical analysis. Students also undertake a work placement in the industry to gain hands-on experience and professional skills. Additionally, students can select electives such as adapted physical activity, group fitness instruction, sports coaching, outdoor recreation, or teaching and assessment methodologies for aquatics. The program equips graduates with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional experience required for careers in sport management, coaching, recreation, sports development, event management, and other related industries, while also offering a pathway to the level 8 honours degree.
