COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Business in Sports Management and Coaching (GAA specialism) is a four-year honours degree designed for students passionate about sport, particularly Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) activities, while also developing strong business and management skills. The program combines practical coaching, player development, and sports science with the organizational, financial, and strategic aspects of sport management.In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through modules in coaching pedagogy, player development, applied anatomy and sport physiology, sport management principles, information technology, and professional writing and research. The focus is on developing practical coaching skills alongside a strong theoretical understanding of sports science and management.Year 2 advances students’ expertise in GAA-specific coaching and player development, club development, sports economics, marketing, finance, strength and conditioning, and injury prevention strategies. Students apply practical techniques to real-life sports settings while learning financial and administrative aspects critical for effective sport management.In Year 3, students focus on leadership, people management, fitness testing, sponsorship, and advanced player development. They also undertake optional modules such as coach education, sports performance analysis, operations management, and community sport. A work placement or study abroad opportunity allows students to gain professional experience and apply their learning in real-world sports environments.Year 4 emphasizes strategic and professional development with mandatory modules in equality, diversity and inclusion, periodisation, strategy, governance and leadership, coaching development, and dissertation research. Electives cover applied sports performance analysis, event management, adapted physical activity, operations management, sport psychology, and physical activity for special populations.The course prepares graduates for careers in coaching, performance analysis, sports administration, club development, fitness and conditioning, event management, and sports governance, equipping them with both practical and business skills required in modern sport and recreation industries. The integration of GAA-specific modules ensures specialized expertise while maintaining a broad foundation in sports management principles.
