COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) in Applied Social Studies in Social Care is structured over four years to progressively develop students’ theoretical knowledge, professional competence, and reflective practice skills. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of social care through modules such as Professional Social Care Theory and Practice, Introduction to Sociology, Social Policy, and Psychology. Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Persons, Health and Safety, Lifespan Development, and Communication, Research and Study Skills ensure students understand core responsibilities, developmental needs, and effective communication. Creative Skills 1 encourages innovative engagement approaches within practice settings.Year 2 places greater emphasis on applied learning. Supervised Professional Practice 1 provides practical field experience, supported by modules such as Health and Wellbeing in Social Care Practice, Community-based Social Care Services, Disability and Positive Ageing, Legal Studies 1, Psychology of Social Cognition, and Social Perspectives on Contemporary Social Care Policy. These subjects deepen understanding of service provision, legal frameworks, and inclusive practiceIn Year 3, students further specialise through modules including Children and Families, Alternative to Home Care, Legal Studies 2, Social Research Studies, and Psychology of Mental Health and Neurology. Creative Skills 2 enhances therapeutic and engagement techniques, while Supervised Professional Practice 2 consolidates professional competence in real-world settings.Year 4 focuses on leadership, ethics, and advanced professional development. Modules such as Ethics and Human Rights, Global Issues for Social Care Practice, Advanced Social Care Practice, Leading Self and Others, Contemporary Approaches to Leadership and Change, and Research Methods with Dissertation prepare graduates to take on senior roles. The program culminates in a research dissertation, equipping students with analytical and reflective expertise for professional social care practice.
