COURSE CURRICULUM

The Product Design program is structured over four years and is designed to develop students’ creative, technical, and professional design abilities. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamental principles of design and the essential skills needed to begin their journey as product designers. During Semester 1, students study Design Discourse, Digital Modelling and Materials, Digital Presentation, Workshop Practice, and Ergonomics and Model Making. These subjects help students understand design thinking, materials, and the relationship between products and human use. In Semester 2, the focus continues with Design Studio 1, Design Trends, Digital Communications, and Digital Modelling and Process. These modules allow students to practise design processes, develop digital skills, and learn how to communicate ideas effectively.In the second year, students begin to expand their knowledge of design methods and industry practices. Semester 3 introduces modules such as International Design Movements, Design for Manufacture, Brand Realisation, 3D Modelling, Working Prototypes, and Design Studio 2 which focuses on design for industry. These subjects help students understand how products are developed for real-world manufacturing and commercial use. In Semester 4, students continue developing professional skills through subjects like Personal and Commercial Visualisation, Design Specification, Design Theory, Methods and Application, Design Live Projects, and Modelling for User Validation. These modules focus on applying design theory while also working on practical projects.The third year focuses on advanced design practice and research. In Semester 5, students explore modules including Data Visualisation, 3D Rapid Prototyping, Modelling Design Features, Design Culture and Society, and options such as academic or work-based electives. In Semester 6, students study Digital Publication, Design Studio 3 focused on Industrial Design, Form and Specification, Surface Finishing and Detailing, and Academic Research Writing. Some students may also choose the Artefact UX Design studio option.In the final year, students focus on professional development and major design projects. Semester 7 includes Project Management, User Behaviour Research, Branding and Exhibition, and a Thesis project. In Semester 8, students complete Enterprise Development and Design Studio 4, where they develop a final product design project. This final stage prepares students for careers in the professional product design industry.
