COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA (Hons) in Music program is structured over four years and combines practical performance, music theory, history, and technical training to provide students with a comprehensive music education. In Year 1, students build fundamental skills in musicianship, performance, and music theory. Modules include aural skills, rudiments of music, music technology, and performance practice. Students also study music history, beginning with early music through to the Baroque period and popular music, while developing academic skills through critical thinking, writing, and research methodologies. Performance and vocal or Irish traditional music skills are also introduced to strengthen practical musical abilities. In Year 2, students continue developing their musical knowledge and practical expertise. They study subjects such as composition and orchestration, classical and romantic music history, Irish traditional music, and ethnomusicology. Music technology remains an important part of the program, along with keyboard and fretboard musicianship skills. Students also take part in performance modules and explore professional development for musicians, helping them understand the music industry and build career-related skills. Elective options allow students to begin exploring areas that match their personal interests.Year 3 focuses on more advanced musical study and creative development. Students examine twentieth-century and contemporary music history, jazz history, and music pedagogy. Technical and creative subjects such as recording techniques and sound synthesis are also studied. Practical skills continue to develop through performance modules, composition, orchestration, improvisation, and conducting. Students also participate in community engagement activities and collaborative projects that connect their musical learning with real-world experiences. In Year 4, students specialise by choosing a major and minor from areas such as composition, performance, research, or music technology. They also study advanced topics in music history and complete specialised projects that reflect their interests and strengths. Throughout Years 2, 3, and 4, students can also participate in ensemble groups such as jazz bands, chamber choir, guitar groups, Irish traditional ensembles, or orchestras. These experiences help develop teamwork, performance confidence, and practical musicianship. Overall, the course prepares graduates for careers in performance, composition, music production, teaching, and further academic study.
