COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies is a four-year honours degree designed to prepare students for professional practice in early childhood education and care. The program combines academic study with practical experience to give a comprehensive understanding of children from birth to eight years. In Year 1, students build a foundation in critical thinking, child development, early years pedagogies, psychology, sociology, Irish social and family policy, research skills, and personal and professional development. Year 2 introduces practice placements alongside advanced topics such as child development psychology, gender studies, early childhood assessment, Irish early childhood education policies, and law, further integrating theory with real-world application. In Year 3, students focus on curriculum, quality and practice, early learning and play, children’s rights and citizenship, comparative early years education, and supporting children with additional needs, complemented by a second practice placement. Year 4 consolidates knowledge and skills through direct work with children, parents, and staff, as well as advanced modules in child health and wellbeing, managing early years contexts, diversity and inclusion, social research methods, and the legal aspects of working with children, alongside a final supervised placement. Throughout the course, students develop professional competence, reflective practice, and practical expertise, preparing them for careers in high-quality early childhood settings, supporting children, families, and communities effectively.
