COURSE CURRICULUM
The Visual Art program is structured over four years and is designed to gradually develop students’ creative abilities, practical skills, and professional understanding of contemporary art. In Year 1, students are introduced to the fundamental principles of art and design. During the first semester they study subjects such as Art and Design: Themes and Contexts, Visual Studies focusing on colour, drawing and 3D, Skills Based Workshops, and Notebook Research. These modules help students build essential creative foundations, develop observation skills, and learn how to document and reflect on their ideas. In the second semester, students continue their development through subjects such as Visual and Material Culture, Digital Media Design, Photography and Video, and a Visual Studies Themed Project. These subjects introduce digital tools and media while encouraging experimentation with different visual forms. In Year 2, the program begins to expand students’ technical and conceptual knowledge. In the third semester students study Video Editing and Art and the Moving Image, which help them understand how visual storytelling works through film and digital media. In the fourth semester they study Art and Design: Themes and Contexts again along with Professional Practice in the Arts, which prepares them for the professional environment of the creative industries. During this year students can also choose electives such as Painting Practices or Sculpture and Expanded Practice to start focusing on particular artistic interests.Year 3 develops more advanced artistic and professional skills. Students study Themes in Contemporary Art and Culture, Entrepreneurship for Artists, and Collaborative Exhibition Practices, which help them understand how art operates in society and the creative economy. Other subjects such as Media Arts, Visual Methodologies and Research Proposal, and Socially Engaged Practice focus on research, experimentation, and community-based art projects. Students can continue specialising in Painting Practices or Sculpture and Expanded Practices through electives. In Year 4, students complete a Dissertation and continue their elective specialisation in Painting Practices or Sculpture and Expanded Practice. This final stage allows students to demonstrate their artistic development, research ability, and creative independence as they prepare for careers or further study in the art and creative industries.
