COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA (Hons) Social Science is structured over three years to provide students with a strong theoretical foundation, research competence, and critical understanding of contemporary social issues. In Year 1, students are introduced to core disciplines through modules such as Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Social Psychology, Introduction to Sociological Problems, and Introduction to Politics in the Irish Context. They explore Irish Social Policy, poverty, social exclusion, race, nation and ethnicities, alongside the Development of the Irish Welfare State. Critical Thinking and Academic Skills and Introduction to Research equip students with essential analytical and study skills, while Irish Society and the Media encourages reflection on culture and communication within society.Year 2 deepens theoretical and analytical engagement. Students study Social Research Methodologies and prepare a Dissertation Proposal, building strong research foundations. Modules such as Classical and Modern Social Theory, Citizenship, Social Justice and Rights, Sociology of Gender, and The Politics of Welfare expand sociological and political understanding. Economic perspectives are developed through Economics of the Market and the Macroeconomic Environment, while Foundations of Ethics introduces philosophical and theological dimensions of social inquiry. Elective modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests. In Year 3, students focus on advanced research and specialised topics. Data Analysis in Social Research strengthens quantitative and qualitative skills, supporting completion of Dissertation 1 and 2. Comparative and global perspectives are explored through Comparing Social Policies and The EU and Globalisation. Additional modules such as Psychology and Crime, Economic Sociology, Social Ethics, and Social Studies in Context further examine complex social challenges. Electives continue to provide flexibility, preparing graduates for careers in policy, research, community development, or postgraduate study.
