COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA (Hons) in Psychology is a three-year interdisciplinary degree designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of human behaviour, mental processes, and the scientific principles underpinning the study of psychology. In the first year, students are introduced to core areas such as general psychology, biological psychology, developmental psychology, cognition and perception, social psychology, and the history of psychology. Alongside these major modules, students select two minor subjects from the humanities, allowing them to develop complementary skills and a broader understanding of interdisciplinary perspectives. The first year also provides foundational training in statistical analysis, research design, and psychological research methods, equipping students with the analytical and methodological skills needed for advanced study. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge with modules in cognitive psychology, abnormal psychology, individual differences, organisational psychology, applied research methods, and psychology laboratories, alongside advanced statistical techniques. Minor subject study continues, helping students maintain a balance between psychology and their chosen humanities disciplines. In the final year, students specialise further with advanced modules such as social psychology, counselling psychology, clinical and experimental neuropsychology, health psychology, and psychology of crime. The year culminates in a dissertation project, allowing students to conduct independent research and develop critical thinking, data analysis, and scientific communication skills. Minor subject study is completed alongside these major modules, ensuring continued interdisciplinary engagement. Across all three years, the program emphasises the integration of theory and practice, rigorous academic research, and evidence-based understanding of human behaviour. Graduates are prepared for postgraduate study or careers in applied psychology, counselling, research, education, health services, and organisational settings. The course is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland, ensuring graduates meet professional standards and are well-positioned for recognition within the field. This combination of academic knowledge, practical research experience, and interdisciplinary learning provides a strong foundation for students seeking to explore the diverse and dynamic field of psychology.
