COURSE CURRICULUM
The course structure is designed to help students gradually develop practical design skills, technical knowledge, and creative thinking over three years. In the first year, students focus on building a strong foundation in design principles and digital skills. In semester one, modules include Digital Presentation, Digital Modelling and Materials, Design Discourse, Workshop Practice, and Ergonomics and Model Making. These subjects introduce students to the basics of visual communication, materials, and practical workshop techniques. In semester two, students continue their development with Digital Communications, Digital Modelling and Process, Design Studio 1 (Skills and Process), and Design Trends. These modules help students understand design processes, digital tools, and emerging design ideas while developing their creative thinking and practical abilities. All modules in the first year are mandatory to ensure students gain essential knowledge and skills. In the second year, students expand their understanding of design through more specialised subjects and studio-based learning. Semester three includes modules such as Working Prototypes, Brand Realisation, 3D Modelling, International Design Movements, Design for Manufacture, and a Design Live Project. These subjects focus on developing prototypes, understanding branding, learning about design history, and exploring manufacturing processes. In semester four, students study Design Specification, Modelling for User Validation, Design Theory, Methods and Applications, Design Studio 2 (Design for Industry), and Personal and Commercial Visualisation. These modules help students apply design theory, develop industry-focused design projects, and improve their ability to visualise and present ideas. Most of the modules in the second year are elective subjects, allowing students to explore different areas of design. In the third year, students further develop advanced design and research skills. Semester five includes Data Visualisation, 3D Rapid Prototyping, Modelling Design Features, Design, Culture and Society, EDU+ (academic), and EDU (work elective). In semester six, students study Digital Publication, Design Studio 3 (Industrial Design), Surface Finishing and Detailing, Form and Specification, Academic Research Writing, and Design Studio 3 (Artefact UX Design).
