COURSE CURRICULUM

This undergraduate course is a four-year honours degree designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in computing, data science, and analytics, combining theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and industry experience. The program is delivered over eight semesters with continuous assessment and end-of-semester examinations, culminating in a QQI BSc (Honours) Degree in Data Science at level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications. In the first year, students develop core computational and mathematical skills through modules such as Computational Thinking, Discrete Mathematics, Programming Concepts, Introduction to Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, Web Design & Development, Computer Architecture, Data Modelling & Databases, and Operating Systems. Year two builds on these foundations with advanced courses in Databases, Object Oriented Programming, Data Programming, Web Application Development, Statistics, Data Mining & Machine Learning, Data Visualisation, and Innovation & Business Entrepreneurship. In the third year, students focus on Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Machine Learning, Data Architecture, Data Warehousing & Business Intelligence, and Scalable Data Analytics, while also gaining practical industry experience through options such as Work Placement, Academic Internship, Service Learning, or International Exchange. The fourth and final year emphasises advanced data science and applied analytics, with modules including Neural Networks & Prescriptive Analytics, Text Analytics & Natural Language Processing, IoT Real Time Analytics, Time Series & Financial Analytics, Governance, Ethics, Security & Sustainability, and an extended Final Year Project spanning both semesters. Throughout the program, students are trained to analyse complex datasets, develop predictive and prescriptive models, implement machine learning algorithms, and communicate insights effectively to support business and research decisions. Ethical, security, and sustainability considerations are embedded across the curriculum, ensuring graduates are professionally prepared for a rapidly evolving data-driven environment. Graduates leave the program with strong technical proficiency, critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, ready to pursue careers in data analysis, artificial intelligence, business intelligence, and related fields across diverse sectors.
