The program offers a diverse and in-depth curriculum designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in biotechnology and biomedical science. Core modules include Introduction to Cell Biology and Biotechnology, Recombinant DNA Technology, Immuno- and Onco-Therapeutics, Introduction to Bioprocess Engineering, and the Biotherapeutic Pipeline. Students also explore key aspects of product development and regulation through modules such as Regulatory Affairs for Biotech Products and Bioseparations, while gaining insights into therapeutic applications in Neuro and Cardiovascular Therapeutics. The curriculum is further enriched with Case Studies in Biotherapeutic Development, Professional Skills for Scientists, and Practical Laboratory Techniques, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for a wide range of roles in the biopharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. A central component of the program is the 12-week Research Design and Methodology Project, which carries 30 ECTS credits. This research or design project can be conducted within DCU on a novel topic in biomedical science, or alternatively, in the student’s workplace if employed in a relevant industry such as biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, or biotechnology, pending approval by the program team and the employer. For students seeking a more experimental and application-driven experience, there is also the option to complete a Master Class in Biotherapeutics instead of the traditional project. This pathway involves performing a tailored set of experiments focused on the design, purification, and validation of a biotherapeutic, such as a monoclonal antibody, and includes the preparation of a grant proposal. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their learning experience based on their interests and career goals, while developing critical research, design, and communication skills essential for success in the biotherapeutics and biotechnology industries.
