COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Creative Writing at DCU is a Level 9 qualification that can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis, offering flexibility to suit students' individual schedules and commitments. The program is structured to provide both a strong academic foundation and practical writing experience. At the heart of the course is a core module titled "Reading like a Writer," which spans both the first and second semesters and carries 30 credits. This module encourages students to engage deeply with literary texts, not just as readers but as writers seeking to understand and apply various techniques in their own creative work. In addition to the core module, students choose three out of four available 10-credit modules, allowing them to focus on their preferred genres: Fiction, Drama, Poetry, or Screenwriting. This selection enables students to tailor their studies to their creative interests while also exploring new forms and styles. A key feature of the program is the 30-credit Writing Project, which gives students the opportunity to produce a substantial piece of original work, such as a collection of poems, a play, short stories, or the beginning of a novel or screenplay. This project is supported by mentorship and feedback from experienced writers and faculty. Full-time students can complete all components of the program within one academic year, while part-time students have the option to spread the workload over a longer period. The program is designed to foster creative growth, critical engagement, and professional development, providing a comprehensive and immersive experience for those aiming to advance their craft and establish themselves within the literary world.
