The Biotechnology degree offers a structured, multidisciplinary education combining scientific knowledge with practical and industry-relevant skills. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology. Laboratory sessions in these core sciences, along with introductory courses in cell biology, biochemistry, and bioprocessing, help develop essential analytical and technical skills.In the second year, students deepen their understanding of biological and chemical systems through modules such as Biomolecules and Metabolism, Cell Structure and Function, Microbiology, Genetics, and Organic Chemistry. Biotechnology-specific courses like Bioprocess Engineering, Transport Processes, and Biotechnology Instrumentation introduce students to the industrial and technical aspects of the field. Scientific literature review and advanced laboratory work also begin to play a more significant role in developing research and critical thinking skills.The third year integrates advanced biological techniques with practical applications. Students study Gene Cloning, Bioinformatics, Advanced Cell Biology, and Downstream Processing, and work with bioreactors in the Bioprocess Engineering Laboratory. A key feature of this year is the INTRA placement, a nine-month work experience in the biotechnology industry, providing valuable exposure to real-world operations and the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a professional setting.In the final year, students choose between two pathways: the Research Stream or the Biopharma Stream. Both streams share core subjects like Industrial Bioprocessing, Proteomics, Genetics, Immunology, and Animal Cell Biotechnology. The Research Stream emphasizes scientific inquiry with a dedicated Research Project and modules in Human Genetics and Commercial Biotechnology. The Biopharma Stream focuses on industry-specific practices, offering courses in Bioprocessing Labs, Advanced Bioanalysis, Industry Regulation, Facility Design, and Drug Formulation. This final year allows students to tailor their learning to either a research-focused or industry-oriented career path. Graduates are well-prepared for roles in biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, or further academic study.
