The Biomedical Engineering degree is structured over four years to provide students with a solid foundation in engineering principles, biological sciences, and the development of medical technologies. In the first year, students are introduced to the basics of engineering through modules such as Professional Development, Project and Technical Drawing, Software Development, Mechanics, Electronics, and Engineering Mathematics. These are complemented by foundational science courses and materials engineering, which collectively prepare students for more specialized study.In the second year, students build on their engineering knowledge while beginning to explore biological concepts more deeply. Modules such as Anatomy and Physiology, Human Movement, and How Life Works introduce students to the structure and function of the human body. At the same time, they continue to advance in core engineering areas including Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials, Thermofluid Mechanics, Design and Solid Modelling, Circuits, and Mechanics of Machines.The third year shifts toward integration of biology with engineering applications. Students study Immunology and Cell Biology alongside more technical modules like Measurement and Signal Processing, Fundamentals of Control, Manufacturing, and Product Design. Product Development and Data Analytics prepare students for modern biomedical design challenges. A key feature of this year is the INTRA work placement, lasting six to ten months, which provides hands-on industry experience and helps students apply their skills in a real-world setting.In the final year, the curriculum becomes even more specialized. Students engage with advanced topics such as Image Processing, Biomaterials, Finite Element Analysis, Heat Transfer, Rehabilitation Engineering, and Surgical Device Technology. Operations Research Methods is also introduced to support systematic problem-solving and decision-making in healthcare contexts. The year culminates in a major project that integrates knowledge and skills from across the degree, offering students the opportunity to innovate and contribute to the future of medical technology.
