ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Dublin City University (DCU), located on the Northside of Dublin, Ireland, was originally established in 1975 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin. It enrolled its first students in 1980 and gained full university status in 1989 under the name Dublin City University. Initially focused on science, technology, and business, DCU has since expanded to include the humanities and performing arts. A significant milestone occurred in 2016 when DCU incorporated four Dublin-based colleges: All Hallows College, St Patrick's College, Mater Dei Institute of Education, and the Church of Ireland College of Education. The university now serves over 17,000 students and has more than 80,000 alumni. It also provides flexible education through DCU Connected, its online learning platform. The university's origins trace back to Mount Street in central Dublin, but by 1979, it moved to a large campus near Albert College Park. The campus began developing with the construction of the Henry Grattan building in 1981 and has since grown significantly. DCU was early to introduce INTRA, a structured work placement program, which became a model in Ireland. It has also played a pioneering role in distance and digital learning, establishing the National Distance Education Centre in 1982, which evolved into Oscail – DCU Online Education, and later became part of the National Institute for Digital Learning. Over the years, the university has been led by notable figures such as founding president Danny O'Hare, Ferdinand von Prondzynski, Brian MacCraith, and current president Daire Keogh. Among its academic staff are figures like former Taoiseach John Bruton and creativity expert Edward De Bono. Although a proposed performing arts academy in 2002 was not realized, DCU remains a modern, innovative institution committed to academic excellence, research, and expanding access to education in Ireland and globally.
