COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Contemporary Criminology is structured around eight core modules that provide a comprehensive and practical foundation in the field of criminology. In Stage One, students begin with Research Methods, which develops the necessary skills for conducting academic and applied research, including data analysis, critical enquiry, and methodological design. Criminological Theory offers an in-depth exploration of key theoretical frameworks that help explain the causes and patterns of crime, forming the basis for interpreting criminal behaviour. The Criminal Justice System module examines the structure and function of legal institutions, including courts, law enforcement, and correctional systems, highlighting how justice is administered in practice.Contemporary Society and Issues in Criminology focuses on the social, economic, and cultural factors that influence crime and criminal justice policy, exploring topics such as inequality, marginalisation, and media influence. Psychology of Crime investigates the cognitive and emotional processes that underlie criminal behaviour, offering insights into offender profiling, risk assessment, and rehabilitation strategies. Policing, Social Actions and Conflict explores the role of policing in society, community relations, and the challenges of maintaining public order in diverse and often tense social contexts.Compliance and Corporate Crime addresses white-collar crime, corporate responsibility, and regulatory frameworks, reflecting the growing importance of financial and organisational misconduct in modern criminology. The program culminates in a Capstone Dissertation, where students conduct independent research on a criminology-related topic of their choice. This final project allows learners to apply theoretical knowledge and research skills to real-world issues, contributing original insights to the field.Together, these modules provide students with a well-rounded understanding of crime, criminal behaviour, justice systems, and policy.
