COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Science is structured over three years, offering a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of society through the lenses of sociology, psychology, criminology, social policy, and research. In Year 1, students are introduced to key foundational topics. Modules such as Academic Skills for Social Science and Introduction to Social Research help build essential academic and research capabilities. Students explore broad themes in modules like The Sociological Imagination and Social Policy and Social Justice, while Introduction to Psychology and Foundations in Criminology offer insights into human behaviour and the criminal justice system. Cultural influences on society are examined through Culture and Popular Media, and Introduction to Economic Sociology introduces the social dimensions of economic systems.In Year 2, students expand on this foundation with more critical and applied learning. Critical Thinking Skills and Advanced Social Research enhance analytical and methodological abilities. Modules such as Global Challenges and Politics in the Modern World explore key international issues and political systems, while Contemporary Criminology deepens students’ understanding of crime and justice. Technology and Society examines the impact of digital transformation on human behaviour and social institutions. Understanding Contemporary Inequalities addresses topics such as class, gender, and race, and Campaigning, Advocacy and Social Innovation focuses on creating social change through action and innovation.Year 3 focuses on specialised topics and independent research. Modules like Families, Intimacies and Personal Life and Migration, Nation and State examine social relationships and global movement. Environment and Society introduces the sociological aspects of ecological issues, while Contemporary Social Policy in Ireland provides a local policy focus. Applied Criminology offers real-world perspectives on crime and justice, and Interpersonal and Group Communication develops vital professional skills. The final Social Science Research Project enables students to apply their learning through independent inquiry.
