COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Studies program offers a structured three-year curriculum that integrates language development, linguistics, literature, and cultural studies to build strong academic and professional competencies. In the first year, students focus on core language skills through reading, writing, speaking, listening, pronunciation, grammar in context, vocabulary building, and advanced composition, while also exploring the structure of English via noun phrases, verb phrases, and sentence formation. Alongside these foundations, learners are introduced to British and American civilisation, the history of the British Isles, and Hungarian culture, helping them develop intercultural awareness from the outset. The second year deepens linguistic and literary knowledge with courses in linguistics, applied linguistics, literature and visual culture, British literature to 1945, modern British literature and culture, American literature, and the history and institutions of the United States. Students also refine analytical thinking and academic research skills through literary seminars and advanced grammar, while those on the Business English specialisation gain additional workplace-oriented language competencies. In the third year, students choose one of three focused tracks—British Literature and Culture, Linguistics and Communication, or North American Studies—allowing them to tailor their studies to individual interests and career goals, culminating in the completion of a thesis. Throughout the program, strong emphasis is placed on critical reading, academic writing, presentation skills, and effective communication, ensuring graduates can interpret complex texts, express ideas clearly, and work confidently in multicultural environments. By combining theoretical frameworks with practical language training, the program prepares students for careers in education, communication, media, business, and international fields, while also providing a solid academic foundation for postgraduate study.
