ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Debrecen, located in Debrecen, Hungary, is the oldest continuously operating institution of higher education in the country, with its origins dating back to 1538. It developed from the Calvinist College of Debrecen, which played a central role in Hungarian education for centuries. In the early 20th century, the institution evolved into a modern university, incorporating faculties of theology, law, arts, and medicine. Teaching officially began in 1914, and by 1927 the original medical campus was completed. Between the two World Wars, the university expanded significantly, adopting the name of István Tisza and completing its iconic main building in 1932. Following World War II, the university underwent major restructuring under communist rule, leading to the separation or closure of several faculties and departments, particularly in theology, law, and Western languages. In 2000, several higher education institutions in Hajdú-Bihar county were merged, forming the present-day University of Debrecen. Today, it is a large, comprehensive university with strong international programmes, especially in medicine and engineering, and hosts around 6,000 international students. It also maintains an associated basic medicine campus in South Korea.
