COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film and Media Studies BA program at Budapest Metropolitan University is organised so that practical courses build progressively across semesters, helping students understand visual storytelling and filmmaking through both individual and collaborative work. In the first year, students complete basic filmmaking studies, gaining foundational knowledge in film history alongside hands-on training in writing, directing, camera and lighting, editing, and sound. This stage focuses on photography, documentation, documentaries, and experimental and short fiction projects, allowing students to explore core cinematic techniques while developing creative confidence. The second year centres on storytelling, with an emphasis on fiction scenes and feature-style filmmaking, particularly working with actors. Students participate in one- and multi-camera studio shoots and create short scenes and short fiction films based on scripts and adaptations developed during dramaturgical courses. This year significantly strengthens skills in directing, cinematography, editing, writing, sound design, production management, and producing, encouraging deeper engagement with narrative structure and collaborative production workflows. By the third year, the program shifts toward preparing students for their diploma projects, focusing heavily on advanced practical training. Learners concentrate on writing, directing, editing, sound and music, producing tasks, and professional presentation skills, including preparation for pitches on international platforms. This final phase supports students in developing independent creative projects while refining their professional identity and readiness for the industry. Across all three years, the curriculum combines technical training with creative exploration, enabling students to experiment with different genres and filmmaking roles while steadily building expertise. The structured progression from foundational studies to complex diploma work ensures graduates leave with strong practical experience, storytelling ability, and professional awareness, preparing them for careers in film and media production or further academic development.
