COURSE CURRICULUM

The Communication Design bachelor’s program at UE is structured across six semesters, each worth 30 ECTS credits, combining theory, practical design projects, and professional development. In the early semesters, students build foundational knowledge through courses such as General Design Foundations, Language and Typography, Art, Design and Cultural Studies, and Technological Design Methodologies. Practical learning begins early with Foundation Projects 1 and 2, Program Foundations, and a Studium Generale component. As the program progresses, students delve into more advanced topics like User Experience Design, Digital and Analogue Techniques, and Interactions. The curriculum emphasizes both traditional and digital skills, supported by courses in Tools & Technologies (offered across multiple semesters) and Digital and Analogue Workflow. Students also explore theoretical perspectives through courses such as Theories and Discourses in Media and Cultural Theory, Discourses of Aesthetics and Ethics, and various seminars on design theory and curatorial practice. In addition to classroom learning, students engage in project-based modules, including Project 3 to Project 6, which allow them to apply their skills in real-world contexts. One semester is typically dedicated to either studying abroad or gaining hands-on experience through an internship, enhancing both international exposure and industry readiness. A strong focus on critical thinking and contemporary relevance is reflected in modules like Critical Design, Narrative Design, and Design and Innovation. The final semester is dedicated to a Bachelor’s project, which includes a comprehensive BA Project, BA Thesis, Visualization, Documentation, and Presentation, demonstrating the student’s ability to develop, execute, and communicate a complex design solution. The curriculum also includes modules on entrepreneurship and professional practice, ensuring that graduates are not only creatively capable but also prepared for careers in the competitive creative industries.
