ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Hamburg, also known as Universität Hamburg or UHH, is a leading public research university located in Hamburg, Germany. It was officially founded on 28 March 1919 through the unification of three existing institutions: the General Lecture System (Allgemeines Vorlesungswesen), the Hamburg Colonial Institute (Hamburgisches Kolonialinstitut), and the Academic College (Akademisches Gymnasium). Although efforts to establish a university in Hamburg began in the early 20th century, they were initially unsuccessful due to financial concerns and political hesitation. Senator Werner von Melle played a crucial role in pushing for higher education reform in the city, advocating the merger of various academic institutions. His early proposals were rejected by those who viewed Hamburg solely as a commercial center and were wary of the costs and influence a university might bring. Progress was made with the founding of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation in 1907 and the Colonial Institute in 1908, which laid the foundation for academic growth. The university’s first lecture building was completed in 1911 but plans for full establishment were delayed due to World War I. Following the war, von Melle, supported by Rudolf Ross, successfully led the initiative that resulted in the university’s foundation. At its opening, the number of full professorships in Hamburg increased from 19 to 39. The initial faculties included Law and Political Science, Medicine, Philosophy, and Natural Sciences. Today, the University of Hamburg is widely recognized for its academic achievements and research contributions. It is affiliated with seven Nobel Prize winners and one Wolf Prize laureate. The main campus is located in the Rotherbaum district, with other institutes and research centers spread throughout the city. The university reflects Hamburg’s transformation into an important center of education and scholarship in Germany.
