The Technical University of Munich (TUM), or Technische Universität München in German, is a renowned public research university located in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It was founded in 1868 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as the Polytechnische Schule München, with Karl Maximilian von Bauernfeind as its first director. The university originally consisted of six departments, including mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, architecture, chemistry, and agriculture. In 1877, it was renamed Technische Hochschule München and gained the right to award doctoral degrees in 1901. The institution continued to grow and, in 1970, adopted its current name, Technische Universität München.TUM specializes in engineering, technology, medicine, and the applied and natural sciences. It is one of Germany’s largest and most prestigious universities, with a student population of over 52,000 and an annual budget nearing €1.9 billion, which includes funding for its university hospital. The university is organized into seven schools and is supported by numerous research centers, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.The main campus is located in Munich, but TUM also operates additional campuses in Garching, Freising, Heilbronn, Straubing, and Singapore. The Garching campus is the largest and serves as a major hub for research and education. TUM’s reputation as a leading institution is reflected in its status as a University of Excellence under the German Universities Excellence Initiative, which recognizes outstanding research and teaching.TUM has a rich history of academic achievement and innovation. Its faculty and alumni include 18 Nobel laureates and 24 recipients of the Leibniz Prize, one of Germany’s most prestigious awards for scientific excellence.
