COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Urbanism – Concepts for the Built Environment offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of cities, spaces, and the built environment by combining theoretical foundations, design methods, and practice-oriented analysis. Students learn to critically examine both urban and rural challenges and to develop innovative, sustainable solutions through an integrated approach that bridges science, design, and real-world application. The curriculum introduces key concepts of city, space, and place, focusing on theories of built environments, design communication, and drawing techniques as essential tools for urban analysis and expression. Human-centred design plays a central role, incorporating anthropological and psychological perspectives to understand how people interact with and experience built spaces. Through applied urban analysis, students gain skills in socio-spatial evaluation, advanced mapping, and visualisation methods. The program also addresses contemporary urban and rural challenges, including urban economics, future mobility concepts, and social inclusion. Sustainability frameworks are explored in depth, covering ethical systems, environmental assessment tools, and long-term strategies for resilient development. A core component of the program is the studio series, where students work on project-based case studies that investigate space, place, systems, and networks. By combining scientific reflection with hands-on studio work, the program prepares graduates to engage thoughtfully and creatively with complex challenges in urbanism and the built environment.
