COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry and Biotechnology (CBT) study program is structured over three years, designed to provide students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education that builds from foundational knowledge to advanced specialization. In the first year, students complete 45 credit points (CP) from CHOICE modules, with 30 CP mandatory for the CBT major. These include General and Inorganic Chemistry, General Biochemistry, Introduction to Biotechnology: Microbiology and Genetics, and General Organic Chemistry, which lay the groundwork in chemistry and biology essential for the program. The first year focuses on establishing core scientific principles and skills, preparing students for more advanced study. In the second year, students take 45 CP of CORE modules that deepen their understanding of key theories, methods, and practical skills within Chemistry and Biotechnology. Mandatory modules include Physical Chemistry, Industrial Biotechnology, Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, Scientific Software and Databases, Advanced Organic and Analytical Chemistry Lab, Advanced Organic Chemistry, Bioprocess Engineering, Advanced Biotechnology Lab, and Inorganic/Physical Chemistry Lab. Students pursuing a minor may replace two of these modules with minor-specific courses, with the Advanced Biotechnology Lab deferred to the third year if needed. The third year emphasizes career preparation and specialization. Students undertake a mandatory summer internship to gain practical experience and explore career paths. They also choose specialization modules totaling at least 10 CP from options such as Organometallic Chemistry, Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology, Biotechnology in Action, and Fluorine in Organic Synthesis. Up to 5 CP may be substituted with related modules from the Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology program. The year includes opportunities for study abroad and culminates in a Bachelor thesis project, fostering research skills and independent study. This structure ensures students gain theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and professional readiness to succeed in the chemical and biotechnological fields or pursue advanced academic studies.
