COURSE CURRICULUM

The Game Design MA is structured to support students in developing both practical and theoretical expertise in the field of game creation and interactive media. The program begins with the module Expressive Game Design: Games Research and Professional Contexts 1, where students are introduced to the cultural, creative, and professional frameworks of the industry. This is followed by Prototyping Lab: Genre and Affect and Games Research and Professional Contexts 2, which allow students to explore genre-specific design and emotional impact in games through hands-on experimentation and critical analysis.The unit Defining Your Practice offers a structured space for students to explore different creative methods, ideas, and themes relevant to game design. It helps students establish a personal approach to their discipline and supports the formulation of their project proposal. This exploration sets the foundation for a more focused and informed project later in the course.In Context and Method, students engage in current debates through lectures and seminars that provide a cultural and intellectual grounding. This unit fosters a broader understanding of visual communication and addresses interdisciplinary ideas that influence modern game design. Students discuss theoretical texts and examine design-led projects, encouraging reflection on their creative intentions.The Project Development unit guides students as they begin to test and refine their final game design project. This involves a sustained period of self-directed work, supported by tutorials and feedback sessions with peers and tutors. Students explore suitable methods and approaches to bring their ideas to life while developing as independent practitioners.Finally, Realisation and Dissemination sees students complete a resolved and professionally presented final project. This is supported by a critical paper that reflects on the process, outcomes, and conceptual grounding of the work, marking the culmination of their MA journey and demonstrating a deep integration of research and creative practice.
