Arden University is a private, for-profit teaching university based in the United Kingdom, known for its strong focus on flexible and accessible higher education. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes delivered through blended learning and fully online distance learning modes, making it particularly attractive to working professionals and international students. The university’s head office is located in Coventry, with additional campuses in major cities including Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, London, and Berlin, supporting its international outlook and diverse student community. Arden University takes its name from the Arden area of England, where its Coventry headquarters are situated.The institution originated in 1990 as Resource Development International (RDI), founded by Coventry-based entrepreneur John Holden. RDI initially specialised in distance learning programmes for commercial and industrial clients and expanded globally with subsidiaries across the United States, Europe, Africa, and the Far East. Over time, the organisation consolidated its operations and focused on delivering distance learning degrees validated by several UK universities under the motto “Learning without Boundaries.” In 2011, RDI was sold to the US-based Capella Education, marking a significant step toward becoming a fully recognised university.RDI was granted taught degree awarding powers in 2014 and received university status in 2015, relaunching as Arden University. It became the first distance learning university established in the UK since the Open University and was part of a wider effort to increase competition in higher education. In 2016, Arden University was acquired by Global University Systems, which continues to oversee its development and growth. Since then, Arden has transitioned fully to offering its own degree programmes and expanded its student population, with a significant proportion studying from outside the UK.
