COURSE CURRICULUM
The Mental Health and Wellbeing program offers a structured and in-depth academic journey through core psychological concepts, research skills and applied perspectives essential for understanding mental health in contemporary society. The module Introduction to Mental Health provides grounding in how mental health is conceptualised across diverse social, cultural and policy frameworks, while encouraging students to analyse structural inequalities, stigma, and the mental health implications for individuals from marginalised communities including refugees, disabled persons and those experiencing poverty. Introduction to Wellbeing expands this foundation by examining what it means to live well, focusing on emotional balance, life satisfaction, positive functioning and the role of relationships, personal strengths, mindfulness and posttraumatic growth. These ideas are further explored within Wellbeing in the Modern World, where students critically evaluate how modern living influences psychological wellbeing through rapid digital exposure, consumer culture, environmental change, cultural identity and economic pressures. In Mental Health and Wellbeing: Assessments and Interventions, students study psychological conditions such as anxiety, depression and addiction alongside therapeutic responses ranging from cognitive behavioural approaches to integrative counselling methods, developing an understanding of how treatment planning is informed by evidence, ethics and cultural sensitivity. The two research methods modules provide essential academic training in qualitative and quantitative methodologies, encouraging students to work confidently with data collection tools, interview techniques, statistical interpretation and ethical research protocols specific to mental health contexts. The final stage of the program is the research dissertation, in which students design and complete an independent investigation addressing a contemporary mental health or wellbeing issue. This extended research project enables students to bring together theory, inquiry, critical reasoning and academic writing, ultimately preparing them for professional development, postgraduate research, or future training in psychological support roles.
