COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Energy and Sustainable Development at DMU equips students with the skills and knowledge to address contemporary sustainability challenges through a combination of engineering, data analytics, and social science perspectives. The Engineering Business Environment and Research Methods module develops understanding of business in a globalised world, exploring environmental policies, societal change, and sustainability strategies such as supply chain management, life-cycle analysis, and carbon trading. Students also gain essential research skills, including literature review, research methodologies, data analysis, ethics, and report writing, preparing them for independent research projects. Optional modules provide opportunities to tailor the program to individual interests. Resource Efficient Design and Manufacture focuses on sustainable product and process design, introducing circular economy principles, energy management, and life-cycle analysis. Students learn to evaluate resource efficiency across design and industrial systems and gain practical experience through case studies and project work. Data Analytics for Sustainable Energy Systems addresses the increasing data footprint of modern energy systems, teaching data acquisition, cleaning, processing, and storage. Students develop programming skills in Python, alongside statistical analysis, machine learning, and optimisation, and apply these to real-world energy case studies such as renewable energy forecasting, electric vehicle scheduling, and power system optimisation. Sustainable Energy and Transport, Sustainable Development in Practice introduces students to broader societal challenges, linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The module explores behaviour change, governance, and organisational strategies through active participation, case studies, and real-life interventions. The Individual Project provides students with the opportunity to undertake independent research, combining practical or desktop-based investigation with analysis, application, and presentation of results. Students produce a substantial report, typically 10,000–15,000 words, under the guidance of a supervisor, integrating knowledge and skills gained across the course. Collectively, these modules ensure graduates are equipped to contribute effectively to the energy and sustainability sectors, combining technical, analytical, and professional competencies to address real-world challenges.
