COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sustainable Architecture and Built Environment program is structured to provide a rigorous blend of research, design, and technical skills, preparing students to create innovative and environmentally responsible building solutions. The program begins with Methods for Sustainability Research, which introduces students to the principles of research design and strategies, focusing on sustainable development within architecture. Students examine existing work in sustainability and analyse methods to apply in their own research, culminating in a 3,000-word report that lays the foundation for future independent study. In Design Research Lab 1, students apply these research skills to site analysis and the development of design proposals. Working both individually and in groups, they critically evaluate complex issues in an existing building and produce a proposed scheme, enhancing their understanding of sustainable development practices. Building Performance Modelling equips students with advanced technical expertise to assess the environmental performance of buildings. Using dynamic thermal simulation software, students evaluate the impact of building form, materials, energy systems, ventilation, and shading on energy efficiency and thermal comfort, integrating their findings into concurrent design projects. Design Research Lab 2 builds on prior modules, allowing students to investigate and produce comprehensive solutions for a building project. This module emphasises strategic research, sustainable design principles, and compliance with planning policies, regulations, and legislation, culminating in a portfolio of work demonstrating applied knowledge and creativity. Finally, the program culminates in a Dissertation, a 12,000-word independent research project where students select a topic of personal interest, synthesising the theoretical, practical, and technical knowledge acquired throughout the course. Collectively, these modules provide a progressive learning experience that integrates research, design, and technical competence, preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to sustainable architecture, environmental consultancy, and the wider built environment sector, while addressing global challenges such as energy efficiency, climate change, and sustainable urban development.
