ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Cyprus, established in 1989 and based in the capital city of Nicosia, is a public research university that admitted its first students in 1992. It currently enrolls around 7,000 students, with 4,691 undergraduates and 1,549 postgraduates as of the 2010–2011 academic year. The university conducts teaching primarily in Greek, though both Greek and Turkish are official languages. Admission is largely through entrance exams managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus, with special provisions for students with disabilities, specific religious or ethnic groups, repatriated Cypriots, and Turkish Cypriots meeting academic criteria. The university uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), and students must complete 120 credit hours, including electives from at least two faculties, and an additional 6 to 9 credits in a foreign language. Academic programs are structured around credit hours, with one credit hour equating to a 50-minute class per week per semester. The University of Cyprus holds a global academic reputation, ranked 368th by QS World University Rankings 2024, 501–600 by Times Higher Education, 701–800 by ARWU, and 643rd by U.S. News & World Report. It plays a significant role in higher education in Cyprus, contributing to the country’s academic and research development.
