COURSE CURRICULUM
The MSc in Structural Robustness for Extreme Loading Conditions is a three-semester, 90 ECTS postgraduate programme designed to develop highly specialised expertise in the analysis, design, and protection of structures exposed to extreme events such as earthquakes, explosions, fires, and other catastrophic hazards. In the first semester, students build a strong technical foundation through modules in retrofitting of structures, fire safety of structures, advanced structural dynamics, and advanced structural analysis. These courses provide advanced knowledge of strengthening existing structures, understanding structural behaviour under dynamic loads, and evaluating the response of buildings and infrastructure under extreme conditions. The second semester focuses on specialised engineering applications through modules in structural fire resistance design, advanced earthquake engineering, design of blast-resistant structures, and risk engineering and risk management. These subjects equip students with the skills needed to design resilient structures capable of resisting severe loading conditions while minimising the risk of disproportionate or progressive collapse. Students also gain expertise in hazard assessment, disaster mitigation, and the management of risks associated with natural and human-induced events. The programme concludes in the third semester with an MSc dissertation worth 30 ECTS, allowing students to undertake independent research on a specialised topic related to structural robustness, resilient infrastructure, or extreme loading conditions and apply advanced engineering principles to real-world problems. Overall, the programme combines advanced structural engineering theory with practical and industry-focused applications, preparing graduates to become experts in the design and assessment of robust structures and critical infrastructure. The multidisciplinary curriculum develops analytical, research, and problem-solving skills that are essential for careers in structural engineering consultancy, disaster-resilient infrastructure design, risk assessment, construction management, research institutions, and government agencies responsible for public safety and infrastructure protection. Graduates are equipped to contribute significantly to the development of safer and more resilient buildings and infrastructure in Cyprus and internationally, addressing one of the most important challenges facing modern structural engineering.
