COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Financial Crime and Criminal Justice is a three-semester, 90 ECTS postgraduate programme designed to provide specialised expertise in financial crime, economic criminal law, and transnational justice systems. In the first semester, students undertake the compulsory module in economic crime with an emphasis on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) and choose from a range of electives covering anti-corruption law, criminal capital market law, corporate responsibility, professional secrecy, financial crime, and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) mutual evaluation system. These subjects provide a strong foundation in the legal and regulatory frameworks governing financial crime. The second semester focuses on advanced and international dimensions of economic criminal law through a compulsory module in European Economic Criminal Law and electives including organised crime, investigation and prosecution of economic crimes, corporate criminal law and compliance, cybercrime and cybersecurity, global taxation standards, and European banking law. These modules develop expertise in complex cross-border investigations, compliance systems, asset freezing and confiscation procedures, and emerging financial and cyber-related offences. The final semester is dedicated to an independent dissertation worth 30 ECTS, requiring students to conduct original research on a topic related to financial crime and criminal justice. The dissertation must demonstrate extensive research, critical analysis of international literature, and well-supported conclusions within a word limit of 10,000 to 15,000 words. The programme offers flexible study options, allowing completion in either one year through an accelerated route or up to three years on a part-time basis. Through a combination of lectures, research, and specialised electives, the programme equips graduates with advanced legal, analytical, and investigative skills required for careers in criminal law practice, financial crime compliance, law enforcement agencies, regulatory authorities, financial institutions, and international organisations dealing with economic and transnational crime.
