COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language Foundation Course is structured over two semesters to progressively build students’ academic English proficiency and confidence within a higher education environment. In the first semester, students are introduced to the language expectations of the course and key features of the academic environment, including participation norms and communication styles. They develop essential listening and speaking skills for understanding lectures and contributing to discussions and presentations. Reading skills are strengthened to improve comprehension of main ideas and details in academic texts, while foundational writing skills focus on sentence structure, paragraph development, and clear expression in summaries and short assignments. Students also expand their academic vocabulary and formal language use, applying grammar and terminology through structured practice activities that simulate real academic situations. In the second semester, students deepen their understanding of academic standards and engage with more complex aspects of critical thinking and research expectations. Listening, speaking, and presentation skills are refined for debates and advanced discussions. Reading tasks emphasize critical analysis and synthesis of complex texts, while writing instruction advances to well-structured essays supported by evidence and appropriate academic style. Vocabulary development continues with more sophisticated and discipline-specific language, ensuring students can communicate fluently and accurately in demanding academic contexts.
