COURSE CURRICULUM

The Canine Studies programme offers a comprehensive one-year curriculum that combines scientific knowledge with practical training to prepare students for careers in the canine care and animal services industry. During the first semester, students build a strong foundation by studying the origins and evolution of dogs, gaining an understanding of canine history, domestication, and breed development. Modules in canine nutrition, genetics, and development provide essential knowledge of dietary requirements, hereditary traits, growth patterns, and factors influencing canine health and behaviour. Students also explore canine anatomy and physiology, developing an understanding of the structure and functions of the canine body and how these relate to health and wellbeing. Practical skills are enhanced through Canine Grooming I and an internship, which allows students to gain valuable hands-on experience in professional environments and apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. In the second semester, the programme focuses on developing advanced practical and behavioural competencies. Students study canine obedience, training, and learning techniques, gaining the ability to train and manage dogs effectively using appropriate methods. Additional modules in Canine Grooming II, Canine Day Care and Boarding Operations, and Canine Health and Diseases provide specialised knowledge in professional grooming practices, the management of canine care facilities, and the identification and prevention of common health conditions. The study of Canine Behaviour further enhances students' understanding of canine communication, behavioural patterns, and methods of improving animal welfare and human-animal interactions. Throughout the programme, students develop essential skills in animal handling, observation, problem-solving, communication, and responsible pet care. By integrating scientific principles with extensive practical experience, the curriculum prepares graduates for careers in dog training, boarding and day-care services, grooming, pet care management, and other areas of the growing canine industry while promoting high standards of animal welfare and professional practice.
