Course Curriculum

The MSc in Bioscience is structured to provide a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research experience across three semesters. In Semester One, students study Practical Bioinformatics, gaining hands-on experience with tools and methods for analyzing genetic, genomic, and protein sequence data. Research Planning and Communication develops transferable skills essential for scientific research, including literature review, grant writing, and understanding research papers. Students can also select optional modules in areas such as bioimaging, sustainable agriculture, crop production, high-throughput technologies, advanced immunology, and infectious and non-infectious diseases. Semester Two focuses on Advanced Biomolecular Technologies, providing a theoretical foundation for cutting-edge laboratory techniques while developing data analysis and interpretation skills. Students apply this knowledge in a Protein Engineering Laboratory Project, gaining practical experience in gene cloning, PCR, mutagenesis, protein expression, purification, and analysis. Optional modules cover topics including infectious disease and cancer treatment, medical diagnostics, crop science, genetic epidemiology, cancer biology, and molecular oncology. In Semester Three, students undertake an independent research project aligned with their interests, receiving specialist training in experimental design, advanced techniques, and data analysis under the guidance of a research supervisor. This structure ensures graduates develop a strong combination of theoretical knowledge, practical expertise, and research competence, preparing them for careers in bioscience, biotechnology, healthcare, and further academic study.
